Giving Birth

The Cost of Giving Birth

Financial Considerations

There is a lot that you need to worry about when you are pregnant.  You need to make sure that you keep your baby healthy throughout these nine months.  That means eating the right foods and avoiding certain other foods.  You also need to avoid certain vices that can harm your unborn child, such as smoking, drinking and other drugs.  With all of this worrying during the pregnancy, a lot of people don't think ahead to the actual birth.  Not only will you be going through a lot during this time, you will also have to pay for whatever happens to you during the hospital. This is something that everyone has to take care of but that no one ever really talks about.  You need to prepare for the birth of your child by knowing these prices and saving up for them.

The costs can really add up when you're at the hospital.  You should make sure that you have really good health insurance before you go.  each company and individual insurance plan is different.  They will usually cover a set percentage of the total costs that you incur while you are at the hospital.  It's best to find an insurance plan with the highest percentage.  This way, you will be covered for some of the costs.  Then, you won't have to worry as much about paying your bills.  This can be helpful because birthing costs are often a lot higher than most people expect.

Different aspects of the birth cost different amounts of money.  for instance, if you have a cesarean section, this can add thousands of dollars to your bill.  Unfortunately, if you get this, it is usually mandatory.  While you can talk your way out of some of the cost, this isn't usually an area of negotiation.  Just know that if this does happen, you will be paying a lot for it.

Then there are the medications you can take when you are going through the delivery.  For instance, if you get an epidural, you will have to pay extra for it.  While this is optional, it may be well worth the cost.  After all, this local anesthetic will take a lot of the pain out of your pregnancy.  And since giving birth is one of the most painful things you can do, this extra bit of help could be well worth it.

Another aspect that will cost money is the care of your baby after it is born.  It will need to stay in the hospital for a portion of time.  If there are complications during the birth, your baby may need to stay even longer.  This can cost thousands of dollars, so you need to be prepared.  Overall, birthing costs can vary between eight and ten thousand dollars.  When you have insurance, those costs will be reduced based on the percentage that your health insurance company allows.

There are ways that you can drastically cut the costs of your pregnancy.  Some people choose giving birth at home because they are in control of what happens.  Then, you won't have to pay extra for the work that the doctors do, or the room that the birth happens in.  You should only choose this route if you are comfortable with the lack of doctor's care.  If something goes wrong, you may end up in the hospital anyway.  Only this time, you will be in the emergency room.  As you can see, there are many costs involved in giving birth.  The best thing that you can do is prepare for it.  Giving birth at home is not an option for most people.
